Evidence
During my planning process and teaching, I try to include a variety of instructional strategies to help students develop critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills. My main concern at the beginning of the semester was the negative results on SAT vocabulary tests. Many students were consistently failing the tests and we worked to find a solution to the problem. I asked each student think critically about his/her study habits and devise a plan for future tests. Each student had to consider previous study habits and his/her learning style during this process. Each student worked to solve his/her problem and many noticed a positive change in test scores.
I also required students to keep a double-entry journal for specific texts read in class. The double-entry journal encourages note-taking and critical thinking skills while reading any form of text. One column is reserved for notes and the other is for personal responses to the notes. Throughout our reading of The Things They Carried and Fahrenheit 451, I required students to use double-entry journals to record all thoughts surrounding the texts. Students used this space to respond to key passages and quotes, and relate important themes to his/her personal lives.
