Novel Study
In my last two weeks of my student teaching semester, I read two novels with 2nd and 4th periods. 2nd period read The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien and 4th period read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Although both novels were not written by British authors, I attempted to connect the ideas represented in the novels to previous learning. All students were required to keep double-entry journals during the reading of the texts to facilitate class discussion and record all thinking surrounding the novel. Also, I attempted to incorporate an online space into classroom learning: a class blog. However, as you will see when you look at the website, we had a few issues with the blog and I ultimately decided to return to the daybook for the remainder of the reading. I learned many valuable lessons from the class blog and I hope to use this type of online space in my future classroom.
