Philosophy of Teaching
As a teacher, I want my classroom to be focused on the students and their individuality. Each student brings a history or background into the classroom that I must understand and acknowledge if I want to help them succeed in school and in their future. Cynthia Urbanski said, “Our most important goal as teachers is to give students skills and ideas that they can use in life when we are no longer with them.” It is this statement that will guide me as I teach and learn in the classroom.
My student-centered classroom will focus on the individual growth of the students and myself. Students will learn to reflect on their work and analyze their learning process to understand their growth inside and outside of the classroom. I will reflect daily on the lessons and discussions happening during class and on myself as teacher. Reflection will be the key to understanding what I can do as the teacher to improve my student’s learning experience, and for students to see their individual development as a learner and producer of knowledge.
Also, multimodality will play a major role in the daily activity of the students. Students will learn about and use multiple forms and forums of communication. I believe this will improve their overall communication skills as well as make the students aware of the diverse ways in which they can use their personal voice. Every student has a voice that deserves to be heard and I want to give students the opportunity to express themselves through any means they are comfortable with.
Finally, I believe the classroom should be a safe environment where students are not afraid to express themselves. Students should not be criticized for having a different opinion from mine or anyone else. By creating this type of environment, I believe students will gain more from their learning than in a classroom where the teacher is the focus and their opinions do not matter.
